About Us

Pediatric OT Services for...

Medically Fragile or Complex Care

Parents of the youngest medically fragile children often feel alone and helpless. Infants and young children who spend significant time in NICU, PICU, or under other medical care have complex care needs that inhibit development. And while medical care is certainly the priority, it is also important to support your child’s developmental progress. In fact, your role in this process will empower you as an advocate and caregiver. As a pediatric occupational therapist, I have over 25 years of experience working with children in the hospital setting, including those who are on assisted breathing and feeding systems. Through my whole child and whole family approach, I will address your child’s individual therapy needs while teaching you valuable skills to continue promoting development. Even the most medically fragile and complex children are capable of achieving milestones, which can improve their individualized growth.

Feeding

Feeding problems are scary whether your child is a premature infant in NICU or a toddler exhibiting developmental delays. Occupational Therapy for feeding addresses the specific needs of the child while supporting parents and caregivers every step of the way. Through my more than 25 years of experience with feeding therapy, I can identify whether the concerns are related to motor, sensory, or a combination. I specialize in treatment of motor delays that may occur secondary to reflux and feeding challenges, and I offer support on the progress of food texture when introducing solid foods. I carefully tailor each child’s feeding OT to his or her skills and development level and include you and other caregivers in the process. I guide and teach families throughout each therapy visit so that you are empowered to support your child’s progress.

Early Signs of Autism or Developmental Delays

If your baby or toddler is showing early signs of Autism, Occupational Therapy can begin addressing his or her specific symptoms. There is no need to wait for a diagnosis to get support that will help your child achieve developmental milestones. I provide pediatric Occupational Therapy in your home, at daycare, and in other community settings. My evaluation process is not just a whole child approach, but also a whole family approach. I listen closely to your concerns and understand the worries or fears you might be experiencing. Whether your child’s developmental delays are related to Autism or not, we can work together to help him or her successfully achieve physical and social milestones. Through my “Keep Engaging” therapy approach, I provide you with the specific tools to help your child during their very early years.

Sensory and Emotional Regulation

Babies and toddlers are deeply immersed in a world of sensory processing. New sensations occur daily, and they are not all pleasant. How can you, as a parent, determine if your little one is experiencing disordered sensory processing? If your child is exhibiting extreme aversions that cause major distress, interfering with eating, dressing, or playing, Occupational Therapy can help. I support families and children from birth through kindergarten age to identify issues with sensory processing. Using a combined sensory and behavioral approach, I can assist you and your family with how to address these challenges. Together, we’ll evaluate your child’s sensory reactions in the context of his or her environment and work on strategies that provide relief.

About Adriana Cugini OTR/L

Adriana Cugini
About Above Shot
For 25 years, I have been passionate about providing individualized Occupational Therapy to the very youngest children and their families. When infants, toddlers, and preschoolers have something going on that’s just not quite right, parents often feel scared, confused, and helpless. My mission is to change those feelings into confidence, knowledge, and empowerment. Children are absolutely capable of developing and overcoming many challenges, and so are their parents. I support children and their caregivers to achieve individualized milestones. No two families are the same, which means there is no rigid therapy formula. I meet every family in their respective environment to address their child’s specific needs and provide support that is empowering for the child, parents, and caregivers.
I am a licensed Occupational Therapist in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, certified by the National Board of Occupational Therapy, and a member of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). I graduated from the renowned Occupational Therapy program at Temple University in Philadelphia, and I have been exclusively working with children from birth through kindergarten age ever since. I have practiced therapy in many settings, including home-based services, childcare centers, community centers, outpatient clinics, and school-based services in preschools and multi-disability preschools.
My approach is both whole child and family, because we aren’t just dealing with a set of symptoms or delays. Rather, we are considering the needs of a unique child within his or her unique family. Because of this approach, the parents I meet tell me that they feel relieved that someone is really listening and understands both them and their child. I work closely with parents, caregivers, childcare providers, school directors, medical providers, and other therapists to support every child and family through their developmental milestones. Based in Harleysville, PA, I work with newborns, infants, babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarteners in home, daycare, school, and community settings throughout Montgomery County and Bucks County.

Early Occupational Therapy Services:
Significant Improvements

Pediatric Occupational Therapy Services

A landmark study published in the American Journal of Occupational Therapy found that children who received early occupational therapy services showed significant improvements in sensory processing, motor skills, and adaptive behaviors when compared to control groups.

Direct Occupational Therapy Services

AdrianaOT-for-Kids specializes in direct OT services for infants, babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarteners. When parents begin exploring therapeutic services to help their child, they are often confused, overwhelmed, and nervous. They have many questions, and they wonder what questions they have not yet considered. I have been working exclusively with babies and children under 5 years of age (and their parents) for 25 years.
I begin with an in-person consultation to assess the child and answer parent questions. Following this consultation, parents will have a better grasp on their child’s specific needs and whether or not Occupational Therapy is recommended.
Should parents choose to move forward with AdrianaOT-for-Kids, I will work with them to begin scheduling services. In-person therapy takes place at home, at daycare, or in another community setting so that the child gets individualized attention in his or her natural setting. Parents and caregivers are invited into the therapy process so they can learn strategies that support their child.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE INITIAL OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY CONSULT?

Following your family’s initial consultation, I will send a report with recommendations. If I do not feel that OT is the appropriate course of action for your child, I will provide additional resources that you may pursue. If OT is recommended, I will outline the next steps to begin services.

HOW OFTEN WILL MY CHILD RECEIVE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY?

Therapy sessions are 60-minutes once per week in the home, child care center or community setting. I work directly with the child, then give the parents and caregivers strategies to practice between therapy sessions.

WHAT ARE EXAMPLES OF PEDIATRIC OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY?

Pediatric Occupational Therapy, especially for the very youngest babies and children, looks different than OT services for older children and adults. Through my extensive experience with children in infancy through kindergarten, I have developed effective “whole child” strategies to meet milestones and develop motor skills, feeding skills, and foundational sensory skills with joint attention for communication skills:

Sensory Motor Approach to Improve Motor Skills

Premature and medically complex infants and preschoolers receive OT for the purpose of transitioning from the medical setting to home and achieving fine and visual motor skill milestones. Goals include improving sensory and emotional regulation during transition from the medical setting to home, improving postural control, feeding skills, bilateral hand skills, fine and visual motor skills, and more.

Combined Motor, Sensory, and Social Emotional Approach to Improve Feeding Skills

Holistic OT improves feeding skills as they relate to components of eating, mechanics of eating, or the social and sensory regulation components of eating. Goals include transitioning to new food textures, biting or chewing while regulating and pacing, accepting new sensory information, self-feeding, cup drinking, and more.

Social Sensory Approach to Improve Reciprocal Communication and Learning

Infants and toddlers who show early signs of Autism can improve social engagement and foundation skills for learning and development of milestones prior to, and regardless of, diagnosis. Goals include attending to family and practicing reciprocal social engagement, transitioning smoothly between activities, regulating sensory and emotional responses, expanding communication and attention with peers, and more.

Consultative Services for Child Care Centers and Preschools

Owners and directors of child care and preschool centers who are seeking effective strategies to support children with developmental delays in their care may schedule a 2-hour Occupational Therapy Consult with AdrianaOT-for-Kids. I visit caregivers in childcare settings to provide consultative training for improving:

Milestones and developmental skills
Early Attention and Communication Skills
Sensory Regulation
Social Emotional Skills

Child care directors, teachers, staff, and caregivers will gain confidence and learn to operate as a team through this powerful strategy session. Backed by 25 years of experience working with children, parents, child care providers, and caregivers, I offer evidence-based resources to help adults promote developmental skills in the children under their care. Services are delivered through direct teaching and hands-on classroom setting workshops.
